Polyphony Myth Introduction

Mythology reflects humans' perceptions towards nature, delivering unique world views through the images human create. These images are part of the most primitive plastic art of the world. Meanwhile, mythology also opens up a fantasy world which leads people to the unknowns. But what is there that creates polyphonic mythology? How does polyphonic mythology inspire works of art?

"Polyphony" is a term used in musicology to suggest "multiple melodic lines". It was translated into a rhetoric device after Russian linguist Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin (1895-1975) borrowed it to critique fictions with multiple narratives and contended against single-perspective literary works. In Bakhtin's theory,

polyphonic works would create "heteroglossia", which means the convergence of multiple voices, and lead to a "carnival" with diverse viewpoints. Polyphony Myth, the Contemporary Art Exhibitions of Greater Taipei 2021, is coloured with such carnival vibe, and it invites people to come and have conversation with one another, while abandoning naggings or "monotonous" mythology for setting up an art platform with diverse perspectives.

Contemporary art exhibitions usually reflect the nature of "polyphony". Through the curatorial practice, writings, and exhibition design, curators present viewers a carnival with works of different qualities, concepts, contexts, and meanings, while blending in a touch of local vibes to the exhibition. takes place at 9 Art Space and NTUA Art Village, which consists of a group of compound buildings serving as the campus of an art university, as household buildings, and as exhibition venues. The inclusiveness of these spaces  showcases the freedom for art expression and helps to bring in equal conversation. Also, Polyphony Myth looks into four subissues, and they are all coloured with the original meanings derived from music and carrying the meanings of polyphony. Participating artists then responded to these sub-issues through their art projects and presentation of works.

Heterogeneous Hybrid:

First, let's dissect the word "Heteroglossia". The prefix hetero- means different, while the suffix -glossia means tongues, so the term "heteroglossia" means the presence of different viewpoints. "Heterogeneous Hybrid" could produce the best melody that demonstrates the hybrid nature of contemporary art. Getting views from people of different expertise is just like mixing music - while the final product mixes different tracks of music together, each track is recognizable enough in the musical piece. Following such idea, "Heterogeneous Hybrid" will offer viewers a new train of thoughts about "interdisciplinary practices".

Variation:

Mythological stories could be adapted and reinterpreted by art once creators add in their unique points of views. Therefore, "adapted mythology" and the "original texts" would form a double-voiced discourse like "others' languages that exist in other languages".

The Quotidian:

The carnival-like, pleasing vibe brings people together to quotidian occasions where people could exchange ideas in an earthly and easy- going way. When quotidian elements become the materials and subject matters of art, single narrative with absolute authority no longer applies - because everything can be a part of the mythology in this sense.

Disenchantment:

After the underlying meanings behind mythology are unveiled in artworks, the sacred status of mythological stories is shaken, and artists become the ones to create modern mythologies of their own.

There are two major projects in Polyphony Myth. Artists of different expertise were invited to work with sculptors to create polyphonic pieces of work in these projects.

The Atelier:

In Project One, the Atelier, we can identify the philosophy and artmaking processes of artists – the most charming parts of them – and atelier also witnessed the formation of artworks. Ateliers accommodate the mythology of art creation, demonstrating the invisible culture of the presentation of art.

Notebooks on Cinema:

Project Two, is inspired by Cahiers du cinema, a French film magazine cofounded by André Bazin in 1951. The magazine helps to nurture the French New Wave (La Nouvelle Vague) and many legendary film directors. Among them, Jean-Luc Godard created the renowned auteur theory through writings and filmmaking, so we will screen Film Socialisme (2010) during the exhibition to explore the authorship behind the visual images.

The participating artists bring their own mythologies to the biennial and demonstrate their perceptions of the world. The title Polyphony Mythology speaks of the status of this art carnival – Attaching to the world, it blends in magnificent fantasy and swings between normality and insanity.
